‘Very proud’ Filipino-Americans in Bahrain celebrate Heritage Month

Around 50 participants came together to celebrate the Heritage Month held on 31 October at the US Naval Base in Juffair. Filipino-American Association of Bahrain president, US Navy Captain Ernan Obellos, delivered a welcome remark during a lunch gathering for the active and retired members of the US Navy with their families and friends.

Captain Obellos highlighted the importance of the event and thanked all the guests for joining the celebration to honour the heritage and culture of Filipino Americans and their great contributions to the world.

“The event was organised to show that we are very proud Filipino-Americans and members of US Navy, and proud of our Filipino heritage,” he said. Philippine Embassy official, Charge de Affaires Anne Jalondo-on Louis, who was the guest speaker, conveyed her gratitude to the Filipino-American Bahrain for actively working and on high level of engagement in supporting the plight of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Bahrain. Consul Jess Bryan Baguio and his wife were also present to grace the affair.

“Today’s lunch gathering is a good chance to express our gratitude and to strengthen the bond with the spirit of celebration,” explained Antonette Guese Avila, the Vice President External of Fil-Am Bahrain. She also identified three former Fil-Am Bahrain presidents who came to join the celebration namely Joselito Sarmiento, Virgilio Figueras and Orlando Fontanilla.

Captain Francis C. Cacho, the Armed Forces of Philippines Senior National Representative (AFPSNR) to the Combined Maritime Forces in the Kingdom of Bahrain, was also present at the event. In an interview with the Events & Resource Director of Filipino-American Association of Bahrain, Lory Rabor said: “It is remarkable being a Filipino American, I take pride in it, to be resilient to face adversity and to strive despite experiencing prejudice at times.

Being Filipino-American means I am one tough potato, seasoned by experience and worthy to be one.” Meanwhile, Filipino-American active navy and retirees shared inspirational messages with their rich and diverse stories as grateful members of the US Navy anchored with their Filipino heritage.

Charge de Affaires Jalando-on Louis and Captain Obellos led the cake-cutting ceremony at the celebration. October is a significant month celebrated annually to honour the history, culture, accomplishment and legacy of Filipino Americans.
