A hot summer day in Bahrain calls for the first thing that comes to mind- Water. When we feel parched and dehydrated, water is the most desirable beverage.
Our bodies are designed to need water as it assists with essential body functions such as digestion, maintaining ideal body temperature and transporting nutrients.
Drinking water first thing in the morning flushes out the stomach and balances the fluid levels in the body.
When we sweat during summer, our body loses water, making it crucial to replenish lost fluids.
We need around 3-4 litres of water daily, but I have often heard of people struggling to consume the recommended amount.
Most people lean towards fizzy, sugar-laden drinks, caffeinated beverages, and other alternatives.
These often result in temporary satisfaction. Have you noticed your desire to drink more after consuming sugar-laden aerated drinks?
A temporary thirst quencher makes you feel unsatisfied. Infused water is another excellent alternative, but how much can one consume?
The great news is that you can also keep your body hydrated through food sources!
Several fruits and vegetables are laden with water which can assist with hydration.
Cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, celery, zucchini, and cabbage contain over 90% water.
This is evident even as you bite into these vegetables.
Including them in your diet can speed up hydration after a hot day.
A simple cold sliced cucumber sprinkled with salt can instantly refresh and rehydrate you.
Such foods help you to feel better instantly. Various fruits offer the same benefit.
Watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, and apples are instant hydrators.
A single bite of chilled, juicy fruit provides relief from the scorching summer that can often dehydrate you.
Incorporate these water-rich foods in your meal plans to stay hydrated even as temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius.
Here are two recipes to show you how to add more moisture-rich foods to your summer meals.
The first recipe is Zoodles with Meat Sauce.
Zoodles is spiralised zucchini and does not taste like spaghetti, but you will be surprised at how pleasing it is when combined with a delicious meat sauce.
It would help if you had a spiraliser to prepare zoodles; an alternative would be to cut them into fine long strips.
The second recipe is Apple Pecan Salad. Fresh, juicy, and crunchy apples make this salad so good!
