Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Chief Executive Officer, received two sustainability awards for Bahrain International Airport (BIA) at the 18th Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference & Exhibition in Japan.
The event, held for the first time in three years due to the pandemic, recognised BIA’s commitment to environmental responsibility. BIA was presented with the Green Airports Recognition 2023 Silver Award in the category of airports serving 8 to 15 million passengers annually.
Additionally, BIA received a certificate for achieving Level 4 ‘Transformation’ in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. “We are delighted to be acknowledged for our efforts in building a cleaner and more sustainable future for Bahrain and the global community.
As part of our sustainability commitment, BAC launched the Plastic Waste Management Project in 2020, in collaboration with airport stakeholders, to effectively manage and divert plastic waste from landfills,” stated the BAC CEO.
He further added, “Through this initiative, we have successfully diverted 3,400 kg of materials from landfills annually and recycled 137,600 kg of materials each year. We have also implemented a centralised dashboard to monitor plastic waste streams at BIA.
Currently, we are working on additional improvements, including the substitution of single-use plastics with reusable alternatives and promoting recycling within stakeholders’ operations.”” Al Binfalah said that this achievement marks another important step in our journey to become a carbon-neutral airport.
He expressed the commitment to continue reducing BIA’s carbon footprint and contribute to the global air transport sector’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The CEO affirmed BAC’s dedication to supporting this global initiative and raising awareness about the importance of environmental preservation.
