A first-of-its-kind JAC Advanced Gas Turbine (GT) in the world, manufactured for Alba’s Power Station 5 (PS5) Block 4 Project, is ready for shipment from Japan to Bahrain, according to Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa, the Chairman of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba).

Shaikh Daij said this during a visit to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI)’s Takasago Machinery Works and Hydrogen Park in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, where he expressed excitement at witnessing the world’s first GT manufactured for a primary aluminium smelter.

He highlighted that the completion of the US$265 million PS5 Block 4 Expansion Project in the fourth quarter of 2024 will be a significant milestone for Alba in its journey towards environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.

The project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing Alba’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and setting new standards for sustainable and efficient power generation in the aluminium industry.

Shaikh Daij also shared that the project has achieved 712,790 safe-working hours without any Lost Time Injury as of July 2nd.

Shaikh Daij was accompanied by Chief Executive Officer Ali Al Baqali and Chief Power Officer Amin Sultan.

They also held discussions at MHI’s Headquarters in Tokyo regarding potential collaboration.

The PS5 Block 4 Expansion Project by Alba involves the addition of a fourth block with a similar configuration to the existing ones.

It includes a 680.9 megawatts (MW) M701JAC Gas Turbine Combined Cycle and ties into the existing 220kV Substation.

Once operational in Q4 2024, Block 4 will increase the capacity of the PS5 Complex from 1,800 MW to 2,481 MW and reduce the overall GHG emissions intensity ratio by 0.5x.

Toshiyuki Hashi said the visit “further strengthens our partnership and reinforces our commitment to support our industrial partners accelerate their energy transition, particularly in the hard-to-abate sectors.”
