An international consulting team representing the prestigious Mayo Clinic from Rochester, USA, recently visited the American Mission Hospital (AMH) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) in Busaiteen.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the AMH academic work stream and evaluate the ongoing collaboration between Bahrain’s two healthcare organizations. Dr. George Cheriyan, AMH’s Corporate CEO, highlighted the significance of the newly opened King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) in A’Ali, which is the fifth and largest of AMH facilities.
Notably, KHAMH serves as the official teaching hospital for students from RCSI-MUB. Dr. Cheriyan expressed gratitude for the visionary leadership of the nation, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery in the Kingdom of Bahrain through a year-long engagement with Mayo Clinic.
Mayo Clinic, ranked No. 1 among the World’s Best Hospitals 2023 by Newsweek-Statista’s Global Hospital Ratings, initiated a comprehensive engagement with AMH spanning three work streams: governance, academics, and quality.
The governance workstream visit concluded in June 2023, with subsequent visits by AMH board members and leadership teams to Mayo Clinic in October. Dr. Deepak Abraham, Chief of Medical Staff at the hospital, provided insights into Mayo Clinic’s assessment, conducted from November 14 to 16, 2023.
The evaluation involved facility visits and interactions with organizational leaders, focusing on the existing partnership for student rotations, internship programs, and the potential establishment of residency programs.
Dr. Abraham highlighted RCSI’s establishment of a Clinical Trials Unit at KHAMH, aiming to position Bahrain on the global map by facilitating cutting-edge multicentric Phase II and Phase III clinical trials.
Close association
Ben Langholz, Principal Analyst of Mayo Clinic International Consulting, expressed admiration for the close association between the two institutions in Bahrain, foreseeing an enhancement in the level of medical education offered in the kingdom.
