ILA Learn English Programme benefits hundreds of expats
The Learn English Programme organized by the Indian Ladies Association(ILA) for workers is coming to a close on June 17 at the Ramee Intl., Juffair from 7pm onwards when 60 men and women who successfully completed the course will be honoured with certificates. The course has been conducted as part of ILA’s service projects to the community. It was offered to workers who were unable to afford such training facilities. This year many companies came forward sending their employees for the course.
“The idea of repeating this course year after year was brought about due to the tremendous success of similar courses that were held for the last 16 years by the Speak Easy Sub Committee of ILA. Almost 1000 young men and women would have benefited from this programme that started in the year 2000,” said ILA President Kamlesh Jain.
The main objective of this programme is to help these people acquire basic communication skills in English, which will enable them to interact better at their workplace as well as outside. The programme will also become handy in their day-to-day situations like filling up forms, making applications and writing letters. “In the last few years, we have seen tremendous interest for this course from young housewives who found the course useful for communicating with their school going children” she added.
There were four sessions going on at the ILA premises for the last 2 months for 2 batches. We started with basic spoken and written skills in English and built the tempo of the sessions with sprinklings of communication skills and manners to be followed. This will not only benefit the students in spoken English but also help them to strengthen their daily working attitude in the sales and retail fields, whether they are office boys, salesmen, technicians or delivery personnel.
The teaching faculty who volunteered the services consisted of four qualified teachers Reena Joseph, Rekha Utham, Swasti Mehta and Nalini Vipin.
There were joint sessions where Guest Speakers provided talk on health/ dental care, Yoga sessions and LMRA rules and regulations. “This year a health screening for students was organized and sponsored by the American Mission Hospital and it was well appreciated by the students” said one of the coordinators. Students were also taken for a movie treat during the course of last 2 months. “So all in all it was a sumptuous package that we offered the participants this year”, the coordinators added.
The course for the last two months was coordinated by the Speak Easy Sub Committee members Usha Govindan and Mariam George.
Friday’s graduation ceremony will have Mamta Kumar Sinha, wife of the Ambassador of India to Bahrain and Patron of the Association as Chief Guest. Embassy’s First Secretary Meera Sisodia will be the Guest of Honor.
