How to improve reading habits in children
Each and every child has enthusiasm in reading but in different ranges. These enthusiasms should be encouraged both by parents and teachers especially by library teachers. Parents should encourage reading at the very early stage. Re-reading the same book will help the children build concentration and accuracy. Reading read-aloud stories with facial expressions and modulated voices will encourage reading habits at early stages. Always connect our children with what happens in life. Books of do-it-yourself helps the children improve their reading skills.
After reading a book, ask him questions regarding the characters. It is very important that we should not make the children move to reading in all leisure time because reading is not a punishment. Reading is a fun. Maintaining a proper time a regular basis is a must. At the earlier stages of learning to read make the children aware about the importance of syllables. Provide the children with the right book which suits their age. Children of any age should be provided with books with audio support. Children with reading issues may feel nervous about starting new books; make them familiar with books of big fonts, beautiful and big pictures. This will create an interest in reading. Reading room, light in the reading rooms and even the reading time has an impact for inculcating reading habit in children. Even the clothes the children wear while reading has an impact on reading. Loose cotton dresses are comfortable for reading rather than tight dresses.
It is very important to maintain a book collection at home. Children’s reading skills are motivated by making them read in mother tongue language. Discussions on new books of their age, new words or phrases and new stories will develop reading habits. Children should definitely share their reading experiences with their parents, friends and library teachers. There should be reading clubs, reading groups, literature circles in schools for promoting reading habits in children. Every librarian is following J K F Drury’s theory , “ Right book for the right person at the right time .” In fact, a dedicated librarian has a strong role in improving reading habits not only to children but to all ages.
