Al-Mutairi wins top spot in AGU speaking contest

Manama : The English Language Unit at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) organised the 18th Annual Speaking Contest under the patronage of the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Abdulrahman Yousif, entitled “Speak, Motivate, Inspire” in the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Hall.

The beginner prize went to Ruaa Tarazi for her speech “Journey to Success”. As for the main prizes –third place was won by Sarah Omar for “The Happy Virus”, second place was won by the philosophical speech “Story of a Cat” by student Taha Samir, while first place went to preparatory year student Athbi Al-Mutairi, who participated as a beginner with a speech entitled “Dare to be Different”.

Al-Mutairi spoke about “the beauty of individuality and the fact that some people fear to differ from others, preferring to remain similar to those around them”. He called on others attempt to be bold, in a manner that qualified him to win the first place in the contest.

The stories recounted by the students this year were interesting and competitive, some stemming from personal experiences while others were philosophical. The prizes were split among the best beginner and the top three speakers.

Preparing three weeks in advance, seven students from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences participated in the competition, in which they spoke of any topic of their choice, provided its relevance to their personal experiences, future visions, or lessons they learnt in life, for 5 to 8 minutes.

The competition was not limited to speeches but showcased the talents of some student volunteers in the entertainment segment.

Two university students who had won a previous talent show participated during the contest break, Abdulrahman Al-Anziand his colleague Mohammed Al-Hamad, presenting an East and West music fusion in a distinct novel way through the oud and guitar.

The contest was judged by a three-member judging panel from outside the university, namely Assistant Professor Reland Bloger from Ahlia University, holder of a Bachelor of International Relations and Political Sciences from Gonzaga University in Washington, DC, Teaching Center Manager at the British Council in Bahrain, Neil Sandilands, and Ms Cora Douglas, International Manager of Coast To Coast Education, who has taught English for 9 years.
