‘Sugar by figure’ points to fighting diabetes

Experts discussed the prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom and brainstormed ideas to overcome the issue at an event yesterday.

Officials from the Ministry of Health convened on ART Rotana Hotel & Resort premises in Amwaj Islands yesterday to discuss the issue of the prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom. The Ministry’s Undersecretary Dr Aisha Mubarak Buanq, Public Health Director Dr Mariam Al Hajiri and Head of Nutrition Section Dr Nadia Gharib also attended the event.

A presentation titled ‘sugar by figure’ was delivered by Dr Abeer Al Saweer in which she spoke about topics including the ‘prevalence of diabetes from a CDC perspective’, ‘indicators in play’ and ‘money’. She noted that several studies found the population of Muharraq Governorate was the most affected by diabetes.

She said that the diabetes issue had caused a severe financial strain on the economy. “Diabetes presents a severe economic burden as patients require at least two to three times the health care resources compared to people who do not have diabetes.”

She said that by 2030 the treatment costs on diabetes might triple. “Forecasting direct diabetes cost in the year 2030, where it is expected to increase by almost three times. This increase is on the basis of increasing prevalence and number of diabetic patients.”
