Isle of Jura defied heartbreak and delivered a sensational victory at Royal Ascot, leaving jockey Callum Shepherd overcome with emotion.
Shepherd, who lost a high-profile Derby mount just weeks ago, piloted Isle of Jura to a dominant win in the Hardwicke Stakes (G2), capping off a dream day for both horse and rider.
The win marked Isle of Jura’s fifth consecutive victory this year, adding a prestigious Group 2 title to his already impressive resume.
The race was a rollercoaster of emotions for Shepherd.
Having endured the disappointment of losing the ride on Ambiente Friendly, who finished a close second in the Derby, his jubilant celebration upon crossing the finish line with Isle of Jura was a sight to behold.
Tears welled up in his post-race interview as he confessed to the mental struggle of the past six weeks.
“It’s hard to put it into words,” said an emotional Shepherd. “This win feels extra special after everything that’s happened.
Isle of Jura is a phenomenal horse, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to ride him.”
Trainer George Scott also broke a personal Ascot hoodoo, finally securing his first win at the prestigious meet after a string of 41 losing rides.
The victory was a team effort, with Isle of Jura proving to be a horse of exceptional talent. Bred for greatness, the fouryear-old son of New Approach has taken his connections on a thrilling ride.
Unbeaten in five starts this year, Isle of Jura looks poised for even bigger triumphs in the future.
