After months of struggle, Modern Sport Club officially announced the death of Egyptian player Ahmed Refaat at the age of 31 yesterday.
In a heartfelt statement, Modern Sport said: “With great patience and sadness, and with more faith in God’s will, Modern Sport Club announces the death of Ahmed Refaat, player of the first team and the Egyptian national team, following a severe deterioration in his health.
He was transferred to the hospital where he passed away after a long battle following the health crisis he experienced on March 11, 2024.”
The club extended its deepest condolences to the player’s family and Egyptian football fans, praying for patience and solace for his loved ones. Refaat, formerly of Future Club, collapsed just before the end of a match against Al Ittihad Alexandria on March 11.
Medical staff revealed that he suffered cardiac arrest for an hour and a half due to severe arrhythmia. Doctors performed CPR for an hour and a half in the emergency room. Once his circulation was stabilized, he was moved to the intensive care unit. He was later transferred from Zamzam Hospital in Alexandria to another hospital in Cairo as his condition stabilized.
Dr. Mostafa Hafez, the hospital’s deputy director, confirmed that a chest CT scan improved, and Refaat regained near-normal memory function. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing.
