Bahraini leader honoured as Arab Sports Personality of the Year

Bahrain’s Dr. Shaikha Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa has been celebrated for her unparalleled contributions to women’s sports, receiving the prestigious title of Arab Sports Personality of the Year at the Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Women’s Sports Award 2024.

The award highlights her tireless dedication to advancing gender equality in sports across the Arab world. Both Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Football Association, and Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, Vice Chairman, extended their congratulations, lauding her pivotal role as a member of the Supreme Council for Women, the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and the Committee for Equal Opportunities and Gender Balance in Sports.

Dr. Shaikha Hessa’s recognition coincided with her active involvement in Bahrain’s hosting of the Arab Girls Sailing Championship, organized by the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association on the shores of Al Jazair Beach. She attended the event, where she witnessed competitive displays in categories such as Optimist, ILCA 4, and ILCA 6.

Upon her arrival, Dr. Shaikha Hessa was greeted by prominent figures, including Shaikh Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association and the Arab Sailing Federation, as well as other senior officials. During the event, Dr. Shaikha Hessa met with athletes and representatives from participating Arab nations. She expressed her pride in Bahrain’s role as host, highlighting the tournament’s significance in empowering women in maritime sports and fostering regional collaboration.
