New Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has opened up about the heartbreak of leaving Manchester United but promised to assert his leadership at the King Power Stadium.

The ex-Red Devils striker, appointed on Friday to replace Steve Cooper, has signed a contract running until 2027. His arrival follows a brief yet impressive four-game spell as United’s interim manager, stepping in after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal. Despite earning three wins and a draw, Van Nistelrooy made way for Ruben Amorim, who took over last month.

‘I Was Disappointed, Very Much So’

Van Nistelrooy admitted to feeling "hurt" after being overlooked for the permanent role at Old Trafford but expressed understanding for the club’s decision.

"The moment I took the interim job, I said I was here to help United, and I meant it. So I was disappointed, very much so, and it hurt I had to leave," he said.

"But I understand the new manager’s position. I spoke to Ruben about it. It was an open, honest conversation, manager to manager. That helped me move on and lifted my spirits as I started talks for a new opportunity."

Taking Charge at Leicester

Van Nistelrooy inherits a Leicester squad shaken by reports of poor team cohesion under Cooper, compounded by criticism following a controversial Christmas trip to Copenhagen. To ensure a strong start, the Dutchman emphasized respect and character as the cornerstones of his approach.

"It's the only way to work: mutual respect," he stated. "I made phone calls about the players, and with just a few calls, I had insights on the squad. It was crucial to know they’re good people as well as good players."

A New Chapter

Now at Leicester, Van Nistelrooy has the chance to shape the Foxes in his image. The focus on discipline, character, and authority could prove transformative as he seeks to lead the club back to success.

Van Nistelrooy’s story is one of resilience, and his return to the dugout signals the start of an exciting chapter for Leicester City fans.
