Ruben Amorim has called for calm and realistic expectations following Manchester United's disappointing 2-0 loss to Arsenal on Wednesday. The Portuguese manager has faced a mixed bag of results in his first two weeks in charge, with his team securing a dramatic 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League and a resounding 4-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League, their first four-goal win since August 2021. Despite the high points, the defeat to Arsenal exposed the gap between United and the Premier League title contenders.
“I have to be calm and continue doing the job that we are doing,” Amorim stated in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Nottingham Forest. “Before this Arsenal game, you were asking about the top four, and now we return to this position. It’s very competitive, and the league can change with just one result,” he added, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the Premier League.
While United sits 13th in the table, the Portuguese manager is focused on managing expectations and stabilizing the team's form. Amorim's tenure at Manchester United has thus far been a rollercoaster, with the highs of beating Everton and the lows of their defeat at Arsenal.
In addition to the on-field challenges, Amorim reflected on the passing of long-time United receptionist Kath Phipps, who died at the age of 85. Phipps, who had worked at the club for over 55 years, was fondly remembered by current and former players, including Marcus Rashford, David Beckham, and Wayne Rooney. Amorim shared his condolences, acknowledging the deep impact Phipps had on the club.
Manchester United now looks ahead to their match against Nottingham Forest with the aim of getting their season back on track.
