LeBron James made history on Thursday, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing record for the most career minutes played in NBA regular-season history. The Los Angeles Lakers forward reached the milestone of 57,447 minutes during his team’s 113-100 win over the Sacramento Kings.
Abdul-Jabbar, a six-time NBA champion and six-time MVP, had retired in 1989 with 57,446 minutes played.
James, who turns 40 later this month, surpassed the record just 10 minutes into the game, against the Kings — the same team he faced in his NBA debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003.
“I’ve always been committed to my craft, and my passion and love for the game have driven me,” James said after the game. “I don’t take much time in the off-season, just a little more now. I’ve always made sure my body stays in top shape, even with back-to-back Finals appearances.”
With nearly 12,000 minutes in the playoffs, James has now logged close to 70,000 minutes on the court throughout his illustrious career, which is now entering its 22nd NBA season.
