Daniel Hillier will enter the final round of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic with a one-shot lead after an impressive birdie-birdie finish on Saturday at the Emirates Golf Club.

The 26-year-old New Zealander, who had surged to a four-shot lead early in the day with three birdies in his first five holes on the Majlis Course, faced a setback with three consecutive bogeys starting at the 13th. This stumble opened the door for England’s Tyrrell Hatton, who capitalized with a steady round of 68 to set a clubhouse target of 12 under par.

Hillier showed resilience, sinking a six-foot birdie on the 17th before narrowly clearing the water on the 18th to secure another birdie. He signed off with a two-under 70, placing him at 13 under par and in prime position to claim his second DP World Tour title and first Rolex Series victory. Hillier’s maiden win came at the 2023 Betfred British Masters, hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

“It was a grind,” said Hillier. “With all that wind, I knew it would be tough, but I enjoyed it out there. Tomorrow’s a big day, and I’ll give it my all.” Reflecting on the potential impact of a win, he added, “It would be life-changing. Last year was tough, but I took a break, reset, and now I’m feeling refreshed and ready.”

Hatton, a seven-time DP World Tour champion, is also eyeing history. A win on Sunday would see him equal Jon Rahm’s record of five Rolex Series titles. “This is an iconic event,” Hatton remarked. “It’s one every player would love to have on their CV. I’ll give it my absolute best tomorrow and see where that takes me.”

Overnight leader Ewen Ferguson carded a two-over 74 to fall to third at 10 under par. England’s Laurie Canter and New Zealand’s Ryan Fox are tied for fourth, one shot further back.
