Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following a dismal run of form, capped off by a shocking 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday. The loss marks Dortmund's fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions, leaving the club’s season hanging by a thread.
In an official statement, the club announced, “Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments.”
A Spiraling Season
Sahin’s departure comes just seven months into his tenure, during which the club has struggled to replicate the form that carried them to last season’s Champions League final. Tuesday's defeat in Bologna saw Dortmund surrender a 15th-minute lead, conceding two goals in quick succession during the second half.
Domestically, Dortmund’s fortunes have been equally grim. The team has lost all three of their Bundesliga matches in 2025, tumbling to 10th place in the standings and jeopardizing their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
“After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation,” said Dortmund’s managing director Lars Ricken. “This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna.”
A Painful Exit
At just 36, Sahin’s dismissal cuts short what began as a promising chapter in his post-playing career. A former Dortmund player and fan favorite, Sahin rose through the club’s youth system and went on to enjoy a decorated senior career. He returned to Dortmund in 2024 as an assistant coach after managing Turkey’s Antalyaspor.
Signed to a contract running through 2027, Sahin’s tenure was seen as a long-term project, but results forced the club’s hand.
What’s Next for Dortmund?
With a crucial Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen looming, Dortmund are expected to announce an interim head coach in the coming days. The club will be hoping to steady the ship as they look to salvage their season and avoid further setbacks.
For Sahin, this marks an abrupt and painful end to his time at Dortmund—a club where his legacy as both a player and a coach remains intertwined.
