Manchester City fans may have thought they were getting inside Vinícius Jr.’s head on Tuesday night, but in the end, they only lit a fire under him.

A section of City supporters unfurled a banner during their Champions League clash against Real Madrid, featuring midfielder Rodri holding the Ballon d’Or alongside the words “Stop crying your heart out”—a clear jab at Vinícius, who has openly expressed his belief that his activism against racism cost him the award last year.

Rather than let the taunt rattle him, Vinícius channeled his frustration into his performance, playing a pivotal role in Madrid’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win at the Etihad.

Vinícius Lets His Game Do the Talking

From the opening whistle, Vinícius looked determined to make City regret their mockery. Though he didn’t find the net himself, the Brazilian was instrumental in Madrid’s attacking play, constantly driving at the City defense and creating chances.

And when it mattered most, he delivered. With the game tied at 2-2 deep into stoppage time, it was Vinícius who pounced on a loose ball following a poor pass from Mateo Kovačić. Spotting Jude Bellingham making a run, he lifted a perfect cross into the box, allowing the Englishman to slot home the winner and leave City fans in stunned silence.

Madrid’s Mindset: Keep the Energy for the Bernabéu

Asked about the banner after the game, Vinícius didn’t hold back. “I see everything. I take it in. And then, I respond on the pitch,” he said with a smile.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti praised his star winger’s mental strength, emphasizing that these moments only push him to perform at an even higher level.

With the second leg at the Bernabéu looming on February 19, City may want to rethink their approach—because if this version of Vinícius shows up again, they’ll be in for another long night.
