Bahrain’s veterans edged past Yemen with a gritty 1-0 win in the third round of the Gulf Cup for Veteran Players, sealed by a touch of brilliance from Talal Yousif.
Coming off a goalless draw against Iraq, Bahrain set out to make a statement. Lining up with Ali Hassan in goal, the defensive trio of Ghazi Al-Kuwari, Basel Sultan, and Mohamed Abdullah provided stability, while Rashid Al-Dosari and Saleh Abdulhameed controlled the midfield. Up front, Mohamed Hubail, Ahmed Hassan, and Yousif led the attack, looking to unlock the Yemeni defence.
And it was Yousif who delivered. With the game finely poised, a well-timed ball in behind the defence set up the opportunity. Showing his experience, Yousef cleverly let the ball run through his legs to bring it onto his favoured right foot before calmly poking it past the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner. A moment of composure that underlined his class.
Yemen pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Bahrain’s defence stood firm to see out the result. The win puts Bahrain in a strong position moving forward, as they continue their campaign in the tournament.
