Bahrain’s Under-23 national team faces a must-win clash against Kuwait today in the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship, following a tough 2-0 defeat to Oman in their opening match. With only two group-stage matches remaining, Bahrain must deliver a strong performance to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
Oman Strike Twice to Sink Bahrain
Bahrain’s opening match was decided by crucial defensive lapses, as Ahmed Al-Mushaifri and Khalid Al-Braiki found the net for Oman. Al-Mushaifri’s 35th-minute header exposed Bahrain’s vulnerability on set pieces, while Al-Braiki sealed the win with a 70th-minute finish after Bahrain struggled to control the midfield. Despite Abdulla Al-Khalasi forcing a strong save in the first half, Bahrain’s inability to capitalize on chances cost them dearly.
Kuwait Stand in the Way
Bahrain must quickly regroup against a well-drilled Kuwaiti side that will look to exploit the same defensive weaknesses. Coach Hicham Dimai is expected to make tactical adjustments, with Ali Al Bannai, Salman Younes, and Faisal Saleh likely playing key roles in stabilizing the team. Ahmed Mahmood and Saud Mohsen will be crucial in unlocking Kuwait’s defense, as Bahrain seek their first goals of the tournament.
Do-or-Die Scenario
With only the top two teams in Group A advancing to the semifinals, Bahrain cannot afford another setback. A win today would set up a high-stakes final group-stage match against Jordan, keeping their championship hopes alive and providing a boost ahead of the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Bahrain now stand at a crossroads—they’ll be looking to regalvanize their WAFF campaign and get some momentum going.
