The Catalan court has overturned Dani Alves' rape conviction, citing contradictions and gaps in the evidence. The 41-year-old Brazilian footballer had been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison after being found guilty of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub. However, the court ruled that the accuser's testimony lacked credibility, and video evidence contradicted key elements of her account.
Alves, who had been out on bail during his appeal, is now free to leave Spain. While his lawyers celebrated the verdict, the accuser’s legal team plans to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
The case has sparked a national debate in Spain over women's rights and the justice system, with mixed reactions from the public. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños called for respect for the ruling, while others, including Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz, expressed solidarity with the accuser, emphasizing the need for justice to protect victims of sexual violence.
Despite the decision, the case remains far from over, with potential further legal proceedings ahead.
