Mumbai Indians secured their maiden win of IPL 2025 in dominant fashion, thrashing Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets with 43 balls to spare at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.
The hosts’ bowlers dismantled KKR for just 116 in 16.2 overs, with debutant Ashwani Kumar claiming 4/24 in a sensational spell. The 21-year-old received strong support from Deepak Chahar (2/18) and Trent Boult (1/12), reducing KKR to 31/5 in the powerplay. Only Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26) and Ramandeep Singh (22) offered resistance.
In reply, Mumbai chased down the modest target effortlessly thanks to Ryan Rickleton’s composed 62 off 41 balls. The South African’s innings, featuring 4 fours and 5 sixes, anchored the chase after Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal. Suryakumar Yadav provided the finishing flourish with a blistering 27* off just 9 deliveries at a 300 strike rate.
The victory lifts Mumbai from last to sixth in the standings, while KKR slip to fifth after their second consecutive defeat. Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya praised his young bowlers: “Ashwani showed incredible composure on debut. This performance gives us momentum going forward.”
