Bahrain’s coastline has become the stage for a record-breaking test of endurance as four swimmers began a gruelling 170-kilometre relay swim around the island on Wednesday morning.

The challenge, the first of its kind in the Kingdom, is taking place under the initiative and patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. It continues his long-standing support for empowering athletes and championing national ambition.

The swimmers — Abdulla Attiya, Fatema AlMahmeed, Mariam Bin Laden and Donaldson Andrew — dove into the waters at dawn from the Sofitel Zallaq, which will also serve as their final destination. The route will take them through Bahrain Bay and along various coastal paths in a demanding test of teamwork and stamina.

Backed by vision, fuelled by grit

HH Shaikh Khalid’s initiative reflects a broader vision to inspire Bahraini youth, foster a spirit of determination and encourage them to embrace bold, transformative challenges, especially in sport.

Comprehensive safety measures have been put in place. Technical, medical and organisational teams are closely monitoring every leg of the swim to ensure the highest standards of safety. The swimmers will rotate in shifts, navigating both calm and challenging waters.
