Bahrain lead the show
Bahrain leads the medal table with 10 medals (7 gold, one silver and two bronze) after the third day of the Arab Women’s Sports Tournament being hosted by Sharjah Ladies Club in the UAE.
Algeria are second with nine medals (4 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze) followed in third by Yemen with five (2 silver, 3 bronze) and hosts UAE in fourth with two silver medals.
In the latest action, UAE’s Al Wasl beat Lebanon’s Al Qalmoun 3-0 in the volleyball, while Jordan’s Olympic team won 3-0 against Palestine’s Ebdaa.
Basketball action saw Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) beat Baniyas in all UAE clash 104-49, while Algeria’s Olympic team were 64-59 winners against Bahrain’s Al-Najma and Egypt’s Sporting Club got the better of Qatar Ladies Club 51-37.
In the 10 metre shooting competition, Bahrain took the gold, UAE won silver and Kuwait the bronze with Bahraini Moza Ali ranked first in the individual followed by compatriot Aisha Buraiki in second and Emirati Wafa Al Ali third.
In table tennis, Bahrain’s team recorded victories against Saudi Arabia’s Green Jeddah team and the Sharjah Ladies Club team.
Meanwhile, a forum for female sports media persons was held, under the slogan “It’s your turn”. The forum came up with five recommendations for helping more women in to sports media which includes finding solutions for support and more sponsors, the need to work on increasing the role of women in sports journalism and more workshops.
Cooperation between media organisations needs to increase to enable women’s sports more broadcasting time and to prepare and plan a strategy to develop the skills of players and administrators in the various sports federations and giving more attention to award-winners and promoting them as models for the next generation.
Among those in attendance was Supreme Council for Youth and Sports member, Bahrain Olympic Committee board member and chairwoman of the women’s sports committee Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.
The third Arab Women Sports Tournament 2016 is being held under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
