SLC clinch gold medal in final

Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) clinched the gold medal in the basketball final after defeating the Jordan Orthodox Club 66-42 in the final basketball match as the Third Arab Women’s Sports Tournament (AWST) 2016 concluded on Friday in Sharjah, UAE.

The Egyptian Sporting Club finished third to clinch after beating the Algerian Olympic team 67-43. A total of 58 clubs from 18 countries competing in eight sports - basketball and volleyball in group competition, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, athletics as individuals and show jumping for the first time. This tournament was held under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

Algerian Youth Club finished first on the medals table with 17 (nine gold, five silver and three bronze), while Bahrain’s Al Hala Club 15 (9-3-3) came second, in third was Sharjah Ladies Club 25 (3-11-11) with the most medals overall and fourth was Al Bahrain Club 13 (3-4-6).

Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of AWST’s Supreme Organising Committee, praised the performances of clubs and congratulated Sharjah Ladies Club on an excellent overall performance.

Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, Board Member of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, Chairperson of the Bahrain Women and Sport Committee and Head of AWST’s Supervisory and follow-up Committee, said, “The tournament is designed to contribute to the development of Arab women’s sport and encourage every girl, woman and mother to exercise and make physical activities part of their lifestyle. We look forward to seeing more Arab female athletes compete globally as a result of AWST.”
