Hingis–Paes are US Open mixed doubles champions

New York

--

Indian-Swiss pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis became the first mixed doubles team since 1969 to win three major titles in the same year.

Paes and Hingis, who also won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, beat Americans Sam Querrey and Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 tiebreak in the US Open mixed final Friday.

The 42-year-old Paes became the winningest male mixed doubles player in the Open era with his ninth Grand Slam title. He also has won eight major men's doubles championships.

Hingis has now won a total of 19 Grand Slam trophies: five singles, 10 women's doubles and four mixed doubles. She has a chance to add another in the women's doubles final with India's Sania Mirza on Sunday.

Querrey and Mattek-Sands had never played together before. They were a last-minute pairing when Mattek-Sands' regular partner, Mike Bryan, decided not to play mixed at the US Open.
