In hindsight: The Silent Graf
Tennis legend Steffi Graf remained quite silent on Friday night as the current World No. 1 Serena William’s dreams of completing the Calendar Grand Slam came crashing at the hands of Roberta Vinci.
The shocking exit of the 33-year-old gusty American, who already holds all four major titles, failed to evoke any response from the part of Steffi Graf – who was the last tennis star to complete the Calendar Grand Slam in the year 1988.
This became evident when Steffi Graf failed to update her Facebook account after William’s failure to tuck in the semi-final meeting with Vinci with an impressive win to share history with Graf.
Steffi Graf’s Facebook account, interestingly last updated in August, ran everything from family visits to pets. The account, however, was barren with any update on the on-going US Open.
Downplaying the pressure, Williams was earlier quoted as saying: “There’s always another record. There’s always another person to catch.” The Williams-Vinci meeting was a high-volt affair with both players taking their grunts to the highest decibels.
Williams, of course, played well. But, Vinci played better as the crowd went hoo-haa with every stroke the players played even as Steffi Graf failed to take cognisance of the historic event in her Facebook account!
