Police recover $10,000 bike stolen from hotel

Richmond

---

Police have recovered a $10,000 racing bicycle stolen from the downtown hotel at the finish line of the World Road Cycling Championships, the Richmond Police Department said yesterday.

The bicycle, at first believed to belong to the Dutch team competing at this year's event in the Virginia capitol, instead is owned by US rider Evelyn Stevens, who will race for Boels Dolmans in today's opening race of the event, the women's team time trials.

"The stolen bicycle will race again! RPD officers recovered it an hour ago undamaged and returned it to the team," the police announced in a Twitter posting.

The Specialized S-Works bicycle went missing Thursday evening at a hotel where many of the elite riders are staying just a few pedal pushes from where world titles will be decided over the next eight days.

"My shiv outfitted by@SRAMracing @ZippSpeed @quarq @iamspecialized was so speedy it found its way home. Thx RichmondPolice&this wonderful city," Stevens tweeted after getting her bike back.

Police received a tip yesterday afternoon that led to the bike's recovery only a block or so from the hotel, according to the Richmond Times Dispatch.
