Leicester, Man City stay in touch; Arsenal beat Man Utd
Leicester City and Manchester City both recorded wins on New Year's Day to keep them - just about - in the race for the Premier League title.
Leicester won 3-0 at Newcastle to cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League to 10 points, while champions Manchester City beat Everton 2-1 to be a point further back in third, according to Deutsche press agency (dpa).
Liverpool, who now have two games in hand on both teams, play Sheffield United on Thursday.
Aston Villa and Watford boosted their survival hopes with victories and Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-0 to move into the top half of the table.
West Ham moved out of the relegation zone after a 4-0 win over Bournemouth in the first match of David Moyes' second spell in
charge.
Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United all lost ground on the top three.
Chelsea drew 1-1 at Brighton, where Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored a stunning overhead kick to lift the home side to 14th.
Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Southampton, a result exacerbated by a hamstring injury to Harry Kane.
United are still fifth but five points behind Chelsea after goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory in the day's late match, putting them just four points behind United.
Bottom side Norwich are seven points short of safety after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
