Roman River claims day’s richest prize

Roman River claimed an impressive victory yesterday to lift the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) Cup in the richest race of the day at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC). The M and E Racing winner, trained by Alan Smith and ridden by Terry Cain, clinched first place in the six-furlong event in a time of one minute 10.533 seconds. Roman River claimed the lion’s share of the BD5,000 total prize as he bested the six other competing imported horses aged three years old and up.

Likethelook finished two lengths behind as the runner-up for Ramadhan Stable, Jaber Ramadhan and Abdulla Faisal; while Sunsprite came third for Al Afoo Racing Stable, Lee Newman and Mohammed Saeed. Pont Vert competing for Jassim Mohammed Asad, Abdulrahim Jasim and Ramzi Al Baqlawa was fourth while completing the prize winners. All seven races of the day yesterday offered the winner an NBB Cup.

The finale was held over five furlongs with a BD3,000 total prize, and it was won by Macaque. Owned by Victorious, trained by Hesham Al Haddad and ridden by Abdulla Faisal, Macaque triumphed in 1:50.737. Vale Do Sol was five lengths behind in second place, also for Victorious and Hesham Al Haddad but ridden by Husain Makki; while International Man was third for Al Mallah Syndicate, Abduljaleel Mallah and Andrew Elliott. Prince Elzaam came fourth for Al Mohamediya Racing, Jaber Ramadhan and Paddy Mathers.

In the day’s fifth race, Gold Spinner claimed the win amongst the 13 three-year-old and older imported horses. Competing for Al Afoo Racing Stable, Mohammed Saeed and Lee Newman, Gold Spinner completed the seven-furlong race in 1:24.867 to come away with the biggest share of the BD3,000 prize. Tamaady was second for Fateel Brothers Syndicate, Basem Mahdi and Marcialis Jaures; Punk came third for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Hesham Al Haddad and Husain Makki; and Emerald came fourth for Late Abdulrasool K Darwish Stable, Abdulla Haji and Ahmed Maki.

In race four, Safwa won in 1:26.783 for HH Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Abdulla Faisal. Safwa defeated 10 other locally bred entrants in the seven-furlong race, which carried a BD2,000 prize. Nodisasgoodaswink was the runner-up for Victorious, Alan Smith and Rosie Jessop; while Waseela was third for Shaikh Isa bin Duaij bin Salman bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Hesham Al Haddad and Paddy Mathers.

Cha Cha took fourth place for Victorious, Alan Smith and Maitham Ahmed. The third race of the day saw Nardeen triumph for Feras Sami Hashem Al Meshqab, Osama Hashim and Ebrahim Nader. Nardeen completed the six-furlong distance in 1:14.179 to take the lion’s share of the BD2,000 total prize.

Wilayah was second a halflength back for HH Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Andrew Elliott; while Hayel came third for Al Nuwayef Racing; Abdulla Kuwaiti and Abdulla Faisal. Blue Angel completed the top four for Victorious, Alan Smith and Lee Newman. Earlier in the day, Maymuna won the 10-furlong, BD2,000 second race in a time of 2:08.341 for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Hesham Al Haddad and Husain Makki; while Al Mlolesh 1748 clinched the first race, held over six furlongs with a BD2,000 prize, in a time of 1:24.959 for Victorious, Yousif Taher and Abdulla Faisal.
