Defending champions Hidd came away with a resounding 2-0 victory over Al Ahli last night to wrap up the second week of action in the 2020/2021 Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier Football League, while chief rivals Riffa and Muharraq had mixed results.
Saad Al Amer and Ali Abdulla were both on target for the winners, who came away with their first triumph after two matches to start their title defence. They had previously drawn 1-1 with Al Najma in their opening game. Ahli, on the other hand, lost their second straight game.
Elsewhere yesterday, Riffa came away with a hard-earned 2-1 win against Manama, while Muharraq were lucky to escape with a goalless draw against Budaiya.
In Riffa’s triumph, Ali Madan and Mahdi Humaidan were able to fire home for their team. Ali Hassan Saeed provided the lone consolation for Manama.
Riffa joined Hidd as first-time winners for the season in two matches, while Manama suffered their first loss after sharing the points in their opening fixture.
For Muharraq, goalkeeper and Bahrain national team star Sayed Mohammed Jaffar saved his team from a potential defeat. In the 55th minute, he fumbled a well-hit rocket from outside the box, but as the ball bounced on the goal line, Jaffar was able to recover and just in time punch it away from danger.
That helped preserve the nil-nil scoreline as neither team could find a winner en route to the final whistle.
It was yet another draw for Muharraq in two games whereas Budaiya managed to claim their first point.
