Defending champions Muharraq edged past a battling Al Ahli in a five-set thriller last night in the 2020/2021 Isa bin Rashid Bahrain First Division Volleyball League.

Both teams fought hard throughout the match and their duel stretched to the maximum, with neither team easing up in a hugely exciting fifth and final set.

With the score tied at 16-apiece, Muharraq finally broke through, scoring the next two points to close out the gruelling clash 3-2 (25- 20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 18-16).

Muharraq opened the game strong but Ahli came roaring back, winning the second and third sets to take a 2-1 advantage. Muharraq, however, were able to tie the proceedings once more to set the stage for the tight finish. There were multiple ties in the finale, which was fittingly capped with an ace to seal the come-from-behind result.

Meanwhile, in last night’s other game, Al Najma swept past Bani Jamrah 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-22).

This year’s first division league, organised and run by the Bahrain Volleyball Association (BVA), is being held in honour of the late Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa, the former Bahrain Olympic Committee president. Games are being played at the BVA arena at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
