Buffer Zone lifts A’ali Sprint Cup

Buffer Zone lifted the A’ali Sprint Cup yesterday to highlight a seven-race programme at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Riffa.

REHC High Committee chairman His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was present at the races along with several other high-ranking officials.

Buffer Zone triumphed in the day’s final race, held over a five-furlong straight with a BD5,000 prize, which was the richest on yesterday’s card.

The 100-rated, six-year-old ridden by Ben Sanderson lived up to its billing and won in 58.370 seconds for owners Victorious and trainer Hesham Al Haddad.

Dark Shadow was a close runner-up for Al Mohamediya Racing, Osama Hashim and George Wood; while Koncheck was third, also for Al Mohamediya Racing, trainer Hussain Aldailami and jockey Paddy Mathers.

Also winning for Victorious yesterday were Sonja Henie and Al Jellaby 1544. Sonja Henie lifted the Crown Industries Cup in the fifth race for trainer Hesham Al Haddad while ridden by John Egan.

Returnofthemac and Amaan were second and third, respectively.

Al Jellaby 1544 clinched race one to come away with the WAHO Cup. Trained by Yousif Taher, the Ben Sanderson-ridden horse finished ahead of Victorious’ Tuwaisan 1762 and Al Mohamediya Racing’s Al Suwaity M671.

Meanwhile, Kinks lifted one of three Al Sharif Group Cups in the day’s penultimate race for owner Isa Mahmood Al Seddiqi and trainer Hesham Al Haddad.

Saddled by George Wood, the five-year-old completed the seven-furlong event in one minute 23.235 seconds to take the lion’s share of the BD4,000 total prize.

Masarzain came second a length-and-a-half behind for Rashed Racing, Yousif Alboainain and Ebrahim Nader; while Al Fajir Mukbile was third for Raed Ahmed Yousif Alboainain, Yousif Alboainain and Abdulla Faisal.

Al Sharif Group Cups were up for grabs in two other races featuring local horses, and both Sadara and Immortal triumphed.

Sadara took first place in the day’s fourth race over a six-furlong straight. Competing for HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Andrew Elliott, Sadara won in 1:12.952.

Shamikj was the runner-up in the BD4,000 event for Husain and Hashem Al Meshqab, Osama Hashim and Hussain Makki; while Mohaayedah finished third for Victorious, Yousif Taher and Ben Sanderson.

Immortal won in the third race, held over eight furlongs with a BD2,000 prize. The MKAR Racing horse trained by Haider Ebrahim and George Wood completed the event in 1:38.902.

Taufan came second four-and-a-half lengths behind for HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Abdulla Faisal; while in third was Epic for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Hesham Al Haddad and Hussain Makki.

Dance Monkey won the second race of the day for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Hesham Al Haddad and Marcialis Jaures for the other Crown Industries Cup.
