Bahraini-British racing team 2 Seas Motorsport completed their triumphant return to a competition yesterday after winning the 10th-anniversary edition of the Silverstone 500, held in the UK.
The meeting marked the second round of this year’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship, and it was the first time 2 Seas were out on track in 2021 battling in their all-new Mercedes-AMG GT3 car.
The pairing of Hunter Abbott and Martin Kodric paced themselves perfectly to win the three-hour race from pole position. They completed 86 laps and enjoyed a 7.231 seconds gap ahead of their closest challengers at the chequered flag.
The event’s runners-up were the Barwell Motorsport pair of Adam Balon and Sandy Mitchell, while Barwell teammates Leo Machitski and Dennis Lind rounded off the podium places.
All three cars were racing in the GT3 class. 2 Seas were in control for most of the event thanks to an opening stint in which Abbott established a 30s lead over the chasing pack, before pitting after 65 minutes. The race had few incidents, dry weather throughout, and no Safety Car periods. The 86-lap winning total for 2 Seas was also the Silverstone 500’s most in its history.
With the result, 2 Seas co-owner His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said on social media: “Amazing effort by everyone in the team! Many more to come! “Thank you to everyone in 2 Seas Motorsport for making it happen!” 2 Seas’ race victory wrapped up a fantastic weekend for the team, in which they won pole position on Saturday with a combined gap of 1.7s.
Yesterday’s race was the first for the team since their victory in the Gulf 12 Hours of Bahrain held in January at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). They also registered impressive, back-to-back performances at the Silverstone 500, which is the championship’s blue riband event, held at the home of British motorsport.
Last season, the team secured a double top-five finish. 2 Seas’ new Mercedes-AMG GT3 features a new design aesthetic, with an eye-catching front apron, distinctive flics, and a new front diffuser. New headlamps, auxiliary headlamps, taillights and a new rear apron also add to the car’s characteristic look.
