Riffa Club has withdrawn its participation in all levels of competition from the 2021/2022 national basketball season, except for the women’s league in which they are the defending champions.

This was announced yesterday by the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA), which stated that it had received an official letter from the club informing them of their non-participation.

Riffa’s exit leaves only 11 teams for the Zain Bahrain Basketball League for senior men, originally scheduled to get underway on September 14, with the preliminary round-robin taking place until December 15. This will be followed by the Round of Six and then the Golden Square semi-finals and culminate with the best-of-three championship series.

Following Riffa’s withdrawal, the BBA said it would revise the schedule of games and will also meet with club officials to discuss the matter further. This season’s BBA Cup and Khalifa bin Salman Cup will also take place without the participation of Riffa. Meanwhile, the women’s league is scheduled to begin on November 10 and continue until April 15.

The first phase will feature a single round-robin involving all participating squads. Riffa won last season’s women’s title after a resounding 75- 25 victory over Gulf University in the final.
