Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi will be going for gold today when she competes in the final of the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Winfred booked her berth in the medal round as the fastest qualifier from the heats with a time of nine minutes 10.80 seconds.

The Steeplechase final is scheduled for a 2 pm start, Bahrain time. Winfred will be one of 16 participants. The 21-year-old now hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow Bahraini Ruth Jebet in winning the Olympic gold in the event. Jebet claimed the title at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which is one of only two gold medals ever won at the Games by Bahrain.

The other athletes in the race are Peruth Chemutai of Uganda; Genevieve Lalonde of Canada; Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs and Valerie Constien from the US; Gesa Felicias Krause of Germany; reigning world champion Beatrice Chepkoech and Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya; Zerfe Wondemagegn and Mekides Abebe of Ethiopia; Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek of Slovenia; Luiza Gega of Albania; Carolina Robles of Spain; Elizabeth Bird of Great Britain and Genevieve Gregson of Australia.
