Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi was unable to realise her Olympic dream yesterday as she finished 10th in the final of the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Winfred started the race strong but could not keep up with the leaders’ pace before fading in the final half-lap to take her classification in nine minutes 19.74 seconds.

It was a tough result for the 21-year-old who was the fastest qualifier from the Steeplechase’s opening round and Bahrain’s leading hopeful for a medal at the Japanese capital.

With two laps to go, the leaders began to pull away and Winfred tried to stay close behind amongst the top five. But at the bell, it was clear that the gap from the front had become too large to overcome, and Winfred fell back even further over the last half-lap and had to settle for 10th place.

Peruth Chemuta of Uganda clinched the gold medal in 9:01.45, which was a national record, while Courtney Frerichs of the US won the silver in 9:04.79.

Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya came away with the bronze medal in 9:05.39. From fourth through ninth, respectively, were Mekides Abebe of Ethiopia, Gesa Felicitas Krause of Germany, Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek of Sloveina, Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya, Zefre Wondemagegn of Ethiopia and Elizabeth Bird of Great Britain. Behind Winfred was Genevieve Lalonde of Canada, Valerie Constien of the US, Luiza Gega of Albania and Carolina Robles of Spain.

Genevieve Gregson of Australia did not finish while Emma Coburn of the US was disqualified. With Winfred’s finish, Bahrain have just four more events to try and come away with a medal: Birhanu Balew and Dawit Fikadu in the Men’s 5,000m Final on Friday, Kalkidan Gezahegne in the Women’s 10,000m Final on Saturday, the pair of Eunice Chebichii Chumba and Tejitu Daba in the Women’s Marathon that same day, and the trio of Elhassan Elabbasi, Alemu Bekele and Shumi Dechasa in the Men’s Marathon on Sunday.
