Team Bahrain Victorious rider Phil Bauhaus sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne in Poland, to continue his fine recent form. The first leg of the seven-stage event, which is part of the 2021 UCI World Tour, started in Lubin, eastern Poland. After 216km of fairly flat terrain, riders arrived in Chelm but not without having to tackle cobblestones in the last 600m with a climb peaking at eight per cent.

It all came down to the final sprint where the team did a great job positioning Bauhaus to the front. The victorious German said afterwards: “I was super confident with our sprinting group to do a super good result today. We’ve had an amazing season so far and we prepared really good for this race.

“The race was pretty controlled, with three guys in the beginning. Then 15km to go it started to be a little nervous, but we were together as a team, and the guys did amazing in the final circuit. “I saved a bit of energy for the last 150 meters, had another kick. I was focused to catch Hodeg, and I made it.” The result earned Bauhaus his sixth win of the season.
