Bahrain wrap up Davis Cup with back-to-back wins

Bahrain has wrapped up their campaign in this year’s Asia/Oceania Group IV of the Davis Cup with back-to-back victories at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town. Yesterday, the Bahrainis swept past Mongolia 3-0 in their tournament-ending playoff clash, while on Friday, they won their last Pool A match-up against Guam 3-0.

The nationals complete the tournament in the bottom half of the rankings from the 12 participating teams.

Yesterday, facing Mongolia, Hasan Abdulnabi kicked things off in match one with a resounding 6-0, 6-1 win over Sukhbaatar Puntsag.

Yusuf Qaed then enjoyed a similar 6-0, 6-0 win against Oyunbold Baatar, before Hasan and Qaed teamed up to beat Khatansuikh Batbayar and Puntsag 6-0, 6-1.

Against Guam, Abdulkarim Abdulnabi first defeated Camden Camacho 6-2, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1 in his singles match, which Elyas Abdulnabi followed up with a 7-6 (6-1), 6-0 victory over Mason Caldwell.

The Qaed-Hasan pair then completed the clean sweep with a hard-fought, three-set triumph over Mason Caldwell and Derek Okuhama 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Bahrain has been coached by Hesham Malalla in Davis Cup action.

In other play-off match-ups yesterday, Yemen beat Oman 3-0, Kyrgyzstan defeated Guam 2-1, Saudi Arabia overcame Cambodia 2-1, the UAE beat Turkmenistan 2-1, and Iran defeated Iraq 3-0.

With those results, Saudi, the UAE and Iran all booked their places in Asia/Oceania Group III for next year’s Davis Cup.

The Bahrainis will remain in Group IV.
