Bahrain’s Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist Kalkidan Gezahegne won the women’s race yesterday in the XLIV Carreira Pedestre Pupular do San Martino in Spain.

Kalkidan completed the 10K run in 30 minutes 23 seconds as she narrowly missed out on the overall podium, being the fourth-best finisher amongst more than a whopping 1,500 participants.

The 30-year-old Bahraini was well ahead of the rest of the women’s field, with Spaniards Joselyn Brea Abreu and Ester Navarrete Santana coming a distant second and third in 34:32 and 34:45, respectively.

Kalkidan’s time was just over half-a-minute slower than the 10K road race World Record, which she herself set just last month at The Giants Geneva race in Switzerland.

Her run yesterday was her first competition since then, and only her second since winning the silver medal in the women’s 10,000m on track at the Tokyo Olympic Games earlier this year.
