Moroccan professional golfer Ahmed Marjan was yesterday crowned champion of the 13th King Hamad Trophy golf championship, which came to a close at The Royal Golf Club at Riffa Views.

Heading into the last day as joint-leader, Marjan secured the title after carding a one-underpar 71 over the final 18 holes to finish the three-round event with a seven-under-par total of 209.

His concluding round included four birdies, one bogey and one double bogey, and it was enough to secure him the prestigious trophy.

His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, attended yesterday’s events. He awarded Marjan the King Hamad Trophy.

Marjan emerged victorious by two shots ahead of runner-up Jesper Alm of Sweden. Alm played an even-par final round to finish five-under 211 over 54 holes. Alm had three birdies and three bogeys yesterday.

Englishman Louis Campbell, who shared the top of the leaderboard with Marjan after the second round, came third but his three-over-par 75 score brought his three-day tally to three-under 213.

He had a crucial double bogey on hole seven yesterday to go with his four other bogeys and four birdies. Three other English golfers followed on the final standings, with Sam Hobday in fourth with a two-under-par 214 total following a final day score of 75, while 2017 and 2019 champion Luke Joy finished tied fifth with Zane Scotland on one-under 215 totals.

Joy completed play with a final round of 73 while Scotland played a 74. Rocco Sanjust from Italy finished seventh overall with a two-over-par 218 total. Six players were tied-eighth on three-over 219 scores, including Patrick Ruff from England, Keith Egan from Ireland, Gabbe Axell from Sweden, and Englishmen Jacob Davis, Jake Wiltshire and Joshua White.

Egan was the top-ranked amateur, and he was followed by Wiltshire and Rohan Dhole Patil of India, who was tied 14th on a 220 total. Amongst the Bahraini golfers, Khalifa Daij Alkaabi was the best finisher in tied-24th with a 223 total.

Bahrain Amateur Open champion Khalifa Almerisi was second and Nasser Yacoob Saleh was third amongst the local competitors. Following yesterday’s play, the winners were awarded their respective trophies in a closing ceremony, which was attended by a number of officials.

A total of 90 golfers took to the fairways along RGC’s Montgomerie championship course for the prestigious tournament, which was last held in December of 2019. The event was organised and run by the Bahrain Golf Association.
