Bahrain “Golden Girl” Maryam Yusuf Jamal was on Saturday presented with her gold medal for the women’s 1,500 metres from the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa handed Maryam her medal in a special awarding ceremony.

BOC secretary-general Mohammed Al Nusuf and Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) president Mohammed Jalal were also on hand amongst many other high-ranking officials.

Maryam had originally won the bronze medal at the London Olympics, but it was later found that the two athletes who finished ahead of her had committed doping violations.

They were thus stripped of their medals and Maryam was promoted to champion.

Maryam is one of Bahrain’s most decorated athletes.

Her medal presented on Saturday is the first of only two Olympic gold medals won by the Kingdom.

She is also a two-time World Champion in the 1,500m and has multiple Asian Games, Asian and Arab gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m.
