Olympic committees to meet in Qatar rather than Rio

The world's national Olympic committees will hold their next meeting in Qatar rather than Rio as initially planned since Brazil is too busy getting ready for the 2016 Games.

The decision was made Friday at a two-day meeting of the Association of National Olympic Committees in Washington, D.C.

The association had been scheduled to gather in Rio in early April of next year as the Brazilian city by the sea rushes to complete preparations for the 2016 Summer Games.

But ANOC decided it was too much to ask Rio to host an ANOC general assembly bringing together delegations from all over the world even as it tried to put the finishing touches on its Games preps.

Also, the meeting will now be held in November rather than April.

Early April is just six months away and "we couldn't really fill an agenda," said ANOC secretary general Gunilla Lindberg.

What is more, she added, "It is a big organization to take on for a host city."

Qatar had already offered to host the ANOC assembly for 2017 anyway, so it was asked to stage the one being held next year, Lindberg added.
