Bahrain Victorious riders Fred Wright and Jonathan Milan both ranked in the top 10 of the youth category yesterday after the first stage of the 2022 Saudi Tour. The event is under the International Cycling Union (UCI) and it is part of the UCI’s Asia Tour.
It is being held in the northwest region of Al Ula over five stages across a total of 831 kilometres. Wright, from Great Britain, and Milan, from Italy, were 23rd and 25th, respectively, at the end of this 198km stage, which saw a huge group of riders battling for the best finishing position up front.
Teammate Jasha Sutterlin from Germany was Bahrain Victorious’ top finisher in 20th. Santiago Buitrago Sanchez from Colombia was 37th for the team, Kamil Gradek of Poland came 48th, his countryman Filip Maciejuk was 53rd and Bahraini youngster Ahmed Madan 88th amongst the 96 competing riders.
This year’s Saudi Tour is the event’s second edition, and it kicks off the 2022 season for Bahrain Victorious. Meanwhile, Bahrain Victorious will be participating in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, also known as the Tour of Valencia, starting today.
The event is now also part of the newly established UCI ProSeries, with Matej Mohoric and newcomer Luis Leon Sanchez leading the team. Alongside the duo will be Dylan Teuns and Jan Tratnik, with Stephen Williams, Yukiya Arashiro and Pello Bilbao rounding out the team.
The race was founded in 1929 and since then has played host to 72 editions of road cycling racing. As this year’s European road season gets underway, this race is an important season opener in understanding where the team is and wants to be. Around 170 cyclists from more than 20 countries are expected to be competing in the event.
