Bahrain continue to impress in West Asia Para Games

Bahrain’s Elias Al Yasi defeated compatriot Zainab Ali 2-0 yesterday in the badminton competition of the third West Asia Para Games, which is currently being hosted by Bahrain.
Badminton is one of the seven sports that make up this edition of the games, with the others being athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia, goalball, table tennis and weightlifting.
In other matches in badminton yesterday, Bahrain’s Fatima Al-Shaikh fell to Kara Qaloui of Iraq 0-2, Bahraini Elias Hassan Ali was beaten by Khaled Majid of the UAE 0-2, Hassan Ali of Bahrain bowed to Syria’s Amir Sammour 0-2, and Mohammed Kanari, also from Bahrain, fell to Ali Al Asadi of Iraq 0-2.
Sammour was also a 2-1 winner over Khaled Majeed of Kuwait, while Al Asadi lost to Sheha Firas of Syria 1-2.
Elsewhere in badminton, Mohammed Ahmed of the UAE beat compatriot Ibrahim Al Hammadi 2-0, Saleh Mohammed of Yemen beat Hamid Fawaz 2-0, while Abdulla Al Haddad of Kuwait also defeated Fawaz 2-1, Issa Hassan of Syria beat Jamal Al Badwani of the UAE 2-0, and Rashid Al Qallat of Kuwait beat Mohammed Abdulla of Yemen 2-0.
The final round of the badminton competition is scheduled to be held today.
Inching closer to gold Meanwhile, Kuwait inched closer to clinching the gold medals in the wheelchair basketball tournament after defeating Oman 59-41 yesterday.
Their win helped them improve their standing to a perfect six points from three wins and zero losses.
The Kuwaitis were in full control of the contest, going ahead 17-6 at the end of the first quarter and then stretching their advantage to 32-19 at the half.
They extended their lead even further to 52-29 after the third period, before being outscored by Oman 7-12 in the final canto to peg the final score.
In another game yesterday, the UAE defeated Saudi Arabia to claim their second win of the competition while Saudi suffered their second loss.
With those results, Kuwait is in first place on the wheelchair basketball table, followed by the UAE with four points, Bahrain with two points, and Oman and Saudi with zero points.
The Bahrainis were not in action yesterday but will take to the hardwood today against Kuwait at 12noon at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
Saudi and Oman face off in the first game of the day at 9 am.
In goalball, Bahrain lost their two games yesterday, first bowing to Qatar 5-14 and then losing to Jordan 5-15.
Jordan were also 13-3 winners over Yemen, while Iraq beat Saudi 11-1. Also taking place as part of the Games yesterday was action in table tennis and boccia.
The athletics competition will start today in the third West Asia Para Games, with all events being held at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town from 9 am until 6 pm.
Competitors are set to take part in several track and field events such as the discus throw, 100 metres, 400m and 1,5000m.
