Gold rush for Bahrain in West Asia Para Games

Bahrain enjoyed a gold rush yesterday in the third edition of the West Asia Para Games – Bahrain 2022, with the Kingdom’s Paralympic athletes clinching gold medals in boccia, athletics and weightlifting.
They also added silver and bronze medals in all three sports, as well as in badminton.
The Bahrainis clinched the gold medal in the team competition of boccia, with their victorious squad consisting of Issa Khaled Marjan, Mohammed Al Hadar and skipper Ali Al Wadaei.
The result earned Marjan a second gold medal in boccia.
He had previously won individual gold.
The champions of both the team and individual competitions were honoured by Bahrain Paralympic Committee president Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, West Asia Paralympic Federation chief Dr Abdulrazzaq Bani Rashid and other officials.
Meanwhile, Bahrain enjoyed a huge medal haul in the athletics events yesterday. Gold medals were won by Ruba Al Amiri and Amal Al Fardan in their respective shot put categories; Zahra Al Jabouri and Ibrahim Al Muezzin in their 400 metres races; and Ali Al Fardan in the 5,000m.
Several silver medals were also won by the hosts. They included Al Muezzin, Hussain Abdulaziz and Sadiq Al Shaikh in their respective 100m race categories; Abdulaziz again in the 400m with Mohammed Al Shouq, Zakaria Mansour and Sayed Sadiq Jaafar in their respective classes; Maryam Al Hamidi in the discus throw; and Ahmed Al Mushaima in the javelin throw.
Bahrain’s national athletes also took home several bronze medals on the track and the field.
They were claimed by Elias Al Yasi, Youssef Janahi, Ali Saad, Mansour and Jaafar in their respective 100m races; Al Yasi and Saad again in the 400m along with Al Shaikh; Saad Al Maal in the shot put; Abdulla Al Najem in the discus throw; and Ali Al Fardan in the 1,500m.
Another highlight for the home team yesterday was the gold medal won in weightlifting by Amal Al Fardan.
She wasn’t the only weightlifter to appear on the podium after Ahmed Mahdi also claimed a bronze in his competition class.
Finally, several Bahrainis also won medals in badminton.
They include Elias Al Yasi, who won a singles silver before he teamed up with Ali Al Asadi to capture a doubles bronze.
Elsewhere yesterday, Iraq and Jordan advanced to the goalball final.
Iraq beat Qatar 10-0 to book their tickets while Jordan defeated Saudi 4-3 in extra time to advance.
The curtain comes down on the sporting activities today in the third West Asia Para Games – Bahrain 2022.
The closing ceremony will be held at 7 pm at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.
