West Asia Para Games end with Bahrain bagging 12 gold medals

Bahrain wrapped up the third edition of the West Asia Para Games last night with 12 gold medals on their final tally from the competition's seven sports. Iraq topped the medal table with 52 medals, including 31 gold.

The Games’ closing ceremony took place at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town, with the presence of Bahrain Paralympic Committee president Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, Dr Abdul Razzaq Bani Rashid, President of the Paralympic Federation for West Asia, as well as officials and athletes from hosts Bahrain and the other participating nations. The Bahrainis’ total medal haul included 39 total medals, including their 12 gold, 10 silver medals and 17 bronze.

The table-topping Iraqis added 14 silver and seven bronze to their 52-medal tally, while the UAE were the runners-up with 20 gold, 27 silver and 28 bronze medals. Kuwait was third with 16 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals. Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Qatar and Lebanon rounded off the medal table from fourth through 11th, respectively. Bahrain closed the Games strong with three more gold medals yesterday in athletics. Ruba Al Omari clinched first place in the javelin throw, which earned her a third medal in the competition.

Also winning gold yesterday were Zuhri Jabouri and Mohammed Jawad in their respective 200m races. Bahrain’s athletes were also able to take home a number of silver and bronze medals yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kuwait captured the gold medals in the wheelchair basketball competition after winning all four of their contests. Saudi Arabia claimed the silver and the UAE bronze, while Bahrain finished fourth and Oman fifth.
