Team Bahrain barged through to the final of the first-ever Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Super Cup last night following a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Team Kazakhstan.

The home team set up a mammoth match-up for the tournament title when they lock horns with Team Ireland in tomorrow’s mouth-watering final. The Irish made it through to the MMA Super Cup-decider after beating Team Mexico with a similar 5-3 score line. Both semi-finals yesterday were a race to five wins. The MMA Super Cup is being held as part of BRAVE International Combat Week in Bahrain.

In Bahrain’s clash with Kazakhstan last night, the hosts took the early lead after the first match with Aieza Ramos Bertolso winning by submission against Ayan Tursyn in the first round.

That was followed in the second bout by another quick submission for Bahrain, as Sabrina Laurentina de Souza took the win for the 2-0 advantage. But the Kazakhs wouldn’t go down without a fight and battled back to tie things at 2-2. They then took a stunning lead through Neimat Assadov, who edged out Bahrain’s Kurban Idrisov via a split decision in their fight.

With Bahrain needing to stay in the contest, Ramazan Gitinov delivered masterfully with a submission win against Zhaxybek Aimakhanov, levelling the proceedings once more at 3-3.

Sultan Omarov then gave the home team the crucial lead with a decision victory against Vakhid Timerbiyev. The semi-final victory was then sealed, along with their place in the title match-up, after Gadzhi Gadzhiev took a split decision win against Kazakhstan’s Alik Domnich. For Team Ireland, they progressed to the gold medal round with their own comefrom-behind win against Team Mexico.

The South Americans were in control, having won three of the first four bouts, but the Irish came roaring back and with a furious finish took the next four wins to ensure their march through to the title-decider.
