Doohan captures F2 Feature Race pole

Jack Doohan of Virtuosi Racing captured pole position last night for the season-opening Feature Race in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, being held in support of this weekend’s Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).

Doohan, from Australia, clinched a fastest lap time of one minute 40.542 seconds in qualifying last evening, held under BIC’s bright floodlights.

The Feature Race is set to be held tomorrow with a 1.40pm start. Felipe Drugovich of MP Motorsport, who finished qualifying in 10th, will start the F2 Sprint Race today on pole following the series’ reverse grid rule.

The Sprint is scheduled to flag off at 7.40pm. In yesterday’s qualifying, Doohan narrowly beat out Theo Pourchaire of ART Grand Prix, who had a best lap time of 1:40.683. Juri Vips of Hitech Grand Prix was third on the timesheet i n 1 : 4 0.7 5 5, while Logan Sargeant of Carlin, Ralph Boschung of Campos Racing and Liam Lawson in the second Carlin car completed the top six.

Jehan Daruvala of Prema Racing and Jake Hughes of Van Amersfoort Racing rounded out the top eight from the 22 competing drivers. Meanwhile, Drugovich set the practice pace earlier in the day yesterday with a fastest lap time of 1:44.484.

Classified behind him in the 45-minute session were the Dams pair of Ayumu Iwasa from Japan and Roy Nissany from Israel. Iwasa had a best lap of 1:44.679 in second place while Nissany clocked a mark of 1:44.754 in third.

Drugovich’s French teammate Clement Novalak came fourth and Hitech Grand Prix’s Marcus Armstrong from New Zealand was fifth, while completing the top eight were Daruvala, Lawson and Sargeant.
