Abdulkarim, Fetalino post high series in qualifying

Abdulla Abdulkarim narrowed the gap from leader Emerson Gotencio after posting the Group A high series on day 14 of qualifying in the Funland Ramadan Bowling Tournament 2022, currently being played at Funland Centre’s bowling lanes.

Abdulkarim registered a trial of 751 pins to lead all competitors in his division in the evening’s action. Edison Fetalino from the Philippines followed suit, enjoying a high score of 637 on the day to earn the Group B daily prize for best score. Bowlers in the tournament are being divided into two groups, with Group A for advanced competitors and Group B for beginners and ladies. Contestants from both groups in this first phase attempt trials as much as they need, with the total pinfalls including handicap for their best three trials being considered.

Each trial is composed of three games. Qualifying action continues today and goes on until April 21. It is the first of the championship’s five stages. Abdulkarim’s 751 series was his second-best of the competition. His top mark was 782 and his third-best was 732. He thus improved his three-series total to 2,265 pins for a 251.7 average. Abdulkarim is now just 18 pins behind top-ranked Gotencio on their aggregates. Gotencio has a 2,283 total and 253.7 average in first place.

Abdulrahman Al Kheliwi from Saudi Arabia was also one of the best performers on day 14, as he jumped to third place from 20th after bringing his three-series total to 2,174 for a 241.6 average. Ahmed Al Khaja followed in fourth with a 2,132 total and 236.9 average, while Ahmed Al Goud was fifth with a 2,129 total and 236.6 average, and Ali Al Mass sixth on counts of 2,118 and 235.3. JM Villanueva (2,070, 230.0) from the Philippines and Essa Taqi (2,069, 229.9) completed the Group A top eight.

Meanwhile, Fetalino’s high score of 637 came as his best of the tournament to date, adding to his other leading trials of 572 and 560. Fetalino raised his total to 1,769 for a 196.6 average, which put him in 10th on the Group B standings. Fellow-Filipino bowler Euly Salcedo continued to occupy the top spot with a 1,986 total and 220.7 average, while Ahmed Al Ansari followed with marks of 1,964 and 218.2. Ronald Seralvo from the Philippines ranked third with a 1,893 total and 210.3 average, followed by Isa Akbari in fourth with a 1,871 total and 207.9 average.

Khalid Al Goud (1,863, 207.0) and Sami Saloom (1,824, 202.7) were fifth and sixth, respectively, while Khalid Sameer and Dexter De Asis from the Philippines rounded off Group B’s top eight with similar marks of 1,821 and 202.3. At the end of the qualifying round, bowlers ranked first and second from Groups A and B will advance directly to round three, while bowlers ranked third to 16th from each group will play in round two.

The Funland Ramadan Bowling Tournament is being held in memory of the Late Murtadha Qudrat Rasti, the Late Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, and the Late Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Khalifa. Nearly BD4,000 in prize money will be on offer to the top 16 finishers.
